Frequently asked questions

Do Canadian documents for China still need consular legalization?

+

No. China acceded to the Hague Apostille Convention effective November 2023 and Canada joined on 11 January 2024. Since then, Canadian documents for use in mainland China need only an apostille — the old two-step consular legalization at a Chinese consulate is gone.

How long does an apostille for China take from the GTA?

+

For Ontario documents, our in-person submission at Ontario ODS in Toronto is typically same or next business day. Federal documents routed through Global Affairs Canada take about 20 business days by mail. We confirm a firm calendar date before you pay.

Does an apostille work for Hong Kong or Macau documents?

+

Hong Kong and Macau have been Hague members since before the mainland's accession, and mainland-bound and SAR-bound documents follow different practical requirements. Tell us where the document will be used and we confirm the exact path before starting.
