Do Canadians need a visa for China in 2026?
Most short-trip travellers do not. As of August 2026, Canadian and UK ordinary passport holders can enter mainland China visa-free for up to 30 days for tourism, business, family visits, exchange and transit — no application, no consular fee, no interview. The exemption is a pilot announced on 15 February 2026, in force 17 February through 31 December 2026.
| Situation | Visa needed? |
|---|---|
| Canadian passport, tourism ≤ 30 days | No |
| Canadian passport, business ≤ 30 days | No |
| Canadian passport, family visit ≤ 30 days | No |
| Any stay over 30 days | Yes |
| Work (Z), study (X), journalism (J) | Yes |
| Non-Canadian passport holder living in Canada | Yes (in almost all cases) |
| Diplomatic / official passports | Different rules — check first |
What the waiver still requires at the border
Visa-free does not mean condition-free. Airlines and border officers expect:
- A passport valid at least six months on entry, with one blank visa page
- Proof of sufficient funds for the stay
- Proof of onward or return airline tickets
- Documents required for your next destination
- An airline that has confirmed it will board you without a visa
I live in the GTA on a non-Canadian passport — am I covered?
No. The waiver follows the passport, not residence. Permanent residents, work-permit holders and international students travelling on passports from India, the Philippines, Nigeria, Iran, Vietnam or elsewhere still need a Chinese visa, applied for through the Toronto CVASC. This is the single most common misunderstanding we correct.
Dual nationality: the edge case that catches families
The PRC does not recognise dual citizenship. If you were born in China, once held a Chinese passport or hukou, or acquired Canadian citizenship later in life, your entry situation can differ from a Canadian-born traveller’s — Chinese authorities may regard you as a Chinese national. Roughly 1.7 million Canadians are of Chinese origin, so this is not rare. If any Chinese-issued document exists in your history, get your situation confirmed before booking flights.
After 31 December 2026: the case for a 10-year visa
The pilot may be extended, modified or revoked — nobody can promise which. A 10-year multiple-entry tourist visa is unaffected either way. If you visit family in China regularly, applying while volumes are low is cheap insurance.
